West Hall - The Report24th January 2011

West Hall Paddock Report

After ten years the West Hall report is at last finished. Hurrah!!! Anj Beckham has sent me a copy to post in the digital archive. I have merged the various sections and the full report is available on the website HERE.

It is quite large (14Mb) and if you have trouble downloading it or there are any other issues please let me know!

Digitisation - Chalkpit Field - 2nd November 2010

2009/2010

The section drawings for Chalkpit Field for 2010 trenches 12 and 13 (all 191 of them!) are now complete and up on the Postex Website (under Digitisation). I have also completed work on the 2009 drawings but in doing so discovered that the plans have been filed after the unused blank sheets in the folder. As I didn't think to look there (!!) for the 2010 drawings I'll need to retrieve the 2010 folders from the OVH and have a look!

Report on snail-shells associated with the crouched burial - Added 17th August 2010

Adrian Donaghey has drafted a report concerning the snail-shells found in association with the possible Stone/Bronze age flexed burial found at the start of this season in Trench 12. This is now held in the PostEx Archive section of this website.

On-Trench Records for Roman Project & Boneyard  14th August 2010

Alyson Riches has been very busy using the new scanner in OVH and scanning back records of the On-Trench documentation for Roman Project and Boneyard> which are now on-line. These records are a valuable resource and will allow the work on these projects to progreess at a much faster rate out of season.

SAF - Building Plans -   Added 29 May 2010

Charlie Middleton has draw some detailed building plans for the buildings surveyed as part of the Sedgeford Airfield Project.

These are stored as part of the Bulk Photos under PostEx menu or can be seen Building Plans Here.

SAF - More Photos - Added May 2010

Keith supplied a new set of 14 historical photos from the Sedgeford Airfield that add to photo archive for this project.

To view the photos log in and then select PHOTO Gallery from the PostEx menu. They are held in the Sedgeford Aircraft and crew folder.

Roman Project - Finds Reports7th April

Received the Draft Roman Project small finds reports from Naomi Payne. These can be found under Finds top-menu area under Small Finds archive area and comprise ferrous and non-ferrous reports.

Comment from Naomi:  Please consult her before citing, publication etc.   in case anything has been updated.

Pottery Analysis for 2009 Excavation Season - 22nd March 2010

I have received a copy of the analysis of the pottery sherds recovered in 2009 from Ann Smith. This requires some work before it can be added to the database but I expect to have this up by the coming weekend.

Comment from Ann Please note that although most of it is finalised as much as possible, Neil and I are planning to re-examine several assemblages in the summer, when we shall have the type series to help us. There have been many tiny sherds that have made identification very tricky and hence the dating of some contexts may change. These contexts are clearly highlighted within the notes.

Digitisation - Scannning Boneyard Plans - 20th March 2010

Skeletal Drawings

These are scans of the Skeleton plans for 1996-2004 and were copied from the images held on the OVH computers. Many of these have already been digitised (we are still quantifying what has been done).

Boneyard Plans

This is Work-In-Progress but most years have been scanned - currently only SH06 NT, ET and SH07 (if there are any) still to go. I am working my way through the sheets that I have (which may not be the complete set) and some of these scans will duplicate images digitised by NAU or previously scanned as Skeletal images.

The skeletal plans (1999-2004) and other scans (1996-2004 plus 05/06 OT) and are available on the bulk-website  HERE

The scans have yet to be checked by Gareth Davies and items that are for publication identified for digitisation.

Skeleton S8001 - From CPF -   Added 10th February 2010

Skeleton S8001 This burial was found and excavated towards the end of last (SH09) season so many SHARPies may have missed the discovery. Sophie has recieved the Carbon-14 dating back for this flexed burial in Chalkpit Field and it has been included in the usual skeleton Information folder which has been scanned by Ray and is on-line.

The dating - 2458 -2200 cal BC (95% prob) - suggests that the burial is older than first thought and may give new insights into the pre-history of Sedgeford and the SHARP excavation site in Chalkpit Field. The initial file is available in a PDF format by clicking   HERE

OVH Photo Archive -   Added 6th February 2010

Lynn and her husband have extracted a large Photographic archive from the OVH computers. This covers the years 2000 to 2006 and provides not only a record of the excavations and other investigations plus the Open days, school visits and also the various social events. Included are a number of 'people' photographs which may bring back memories of those years...

Unfortunately the volume of photos and their size precludes display on this website but they are available on-line in an Archive area (see below). The archive is in a compressed form so if you need access to specific items, in a higher resolution, then please let me know. The initial uploads (which comprise almost the complete record) are available in a compressed format by clicking   HERE

Digitisation - Boneyard Section Drawings Completed - 4th February 2010

Section Drawings

All the Section drawings for the excavation seasons in the Boneyard have now been added to the site.   They are to be found under Boneyard (second menu item) - Boneyard Digitisation.

The 2005/6 section drawings for both OT and NT were the last to be completed and, for these years, are held in separate gallery areas. This finishes the sheets that I have, although it is possible that more exist in OVH!

The Section Drawings for 2007 Season for excavations in Boneyard are still to be completed - if such exist.

Plans

Note that Plans were contacted to NAU and these are available elsewhere on this site. These plans exist as separate Year plans and as a composite including all features from the whole excavation series. For SH03, SH04 and SH06 the Old Trench and New Trench plans exist as separate data files.

Note that these drawings have yet to be checked by Gareth Davies and some errors or ommissions may exist.

Digitised Paper Record - CNE 2009   Added 29th January 2010

Many thanks to Lynn Jollans who has scanned the paper records for the 2009 excavations in Chalkpit Field and these are now up on the website under Postex in Archives. They are in the SH09_CNE folder. These are the Context Register, Drawings Register and Small Finds Register together with a scan of all the context sheets. The context records formed a particulaly large PDF file and (although I have taken steps to reduce the size) it is still quite big at 69Mb so may take a considerable time to download. I hope that I haven't compromised quality by doing this. These records will, we hope, we particularly useful to those working on the 2009 reports.

Photographic Archive - Boneyard - Added 16th January 2010

Keith has scanned the complete set of images from the Boneyard excavations (1996-2006) and these are now loaded onto the website. There are almost 600 photographs here which should provide an invaluable resource for those carrying out presentations, research and documenting this area. This is truely an epic amount of work by Keith! These photos are held on the website in a compressed format and higher quality images are available from the archive in OVH or by emailing me!

The converted slides can be found under PostEx tab after loging-in, under PHOTO Gallery menu item. In the listing of Galleries under Boneyard followed by the year number (eg BYD SH01 for 2001). I have also put a copy of the slides up on the external site which can be reached by clicking . They can be found under Boneyard Photographs.

Note that to access subsequent pages click on the page number at the bottom.

Digitisation - Old Trench/RDM Section Drawings Completed - December 2009

All of the Section drawings for the 1996 to 2006 Old Trench excavation seasons of the Boneyard have now been added to the site.   They are to be found under Boneyard (second menu item) - Boneyard Digitisation. Boneyard digitisation of Section drawings is now completed for year 1996-2006 for Old Trench.   The Section Drawings for the two years (2005/06) for New Trench are still to be completed.

Note that these drawings have yet to be checked by Gareth Davies and some errors or ommissions may exist.

Photographic Archive (CPF & RDM) - Added 22nd December 2009

Another set of images, this time from
  - Chalkpit Field (North East)
  - Reeddam
have been scanned by Keith and added to this website.

The converted slides can be found under PostEx tab after loging-in, under PHOTO Gallery menu item. In the listing of Galleries under RDM and CPF NE

Note that to access subsequent pages click on the page number at the bottom.

Photographic Archive (RP & Small Finds) - Added 11th December 2009

Images from the Roman Project have been added by Keith. The copies on the site are slightly lower resolution than the originals but should be sufficient for papers, presentations and lectures. The majority are great but there are a few that have poor exposures and 1 or 2 with Newtons Rings, though that might be due to the slides beginning to curl up in their frames. Several of them seem to be deteriorating relatively quickly as they have a red cast but Keith has caught most of that should now be fine - after some re-working.

The converted slides can be found under PostEx tab after loging-in, under PHOTO Gallery menu item. They can be found in the side list of Galleries under:
  - Roman Project CPF
  - Roman Project PBF
  - Small Finds (Mostly not Anglo-Saxon))

Mussels Reports - Added 9th December 2009

Greg Campbell's report on the incremental sampling ofthe mussel-rich gully from Chalkpit Field 2008, in now in the PostEx Archive section of this website.

I have also included the 2009 report from the Gully (Trench 10) on the Western side of this years site that was particularly rich in intact mussel shells.

Ladywell Field Final Report - Added 7th December 2009

The final version of the report on Ladywell Field by Anj Beckham is now up on the website. I have converted this into a PDF format so that is more widely readable and hope that I haven't made and boobs in doing so. I have also added some bookmarks to make referencing it easier - let me know if there are not enough (or too many)

Digitisation - SH01/SH02 Section Drawings Completed - Added 2nd December 2009

Section drawings for the 2001 & 2002 excavation seasons of the Boneyard have been added to the site. There were 70 section drawings in 2001 but only 15 for 2003!

They are to be found under Boneyard (second menu item) - Boneyard Digitisationas are the ones for previous years

Sections drawings for 2003-06 are still to be completed

Image Magnification New Development - Added 1st December 2009

I have added a new (and better?) method of looking at the skeletal images to the Human Remains section of the website.

It should allow variable levels of magnification and for you to drag the image to see the various areas. There is also the ability to zoom back to the start or to one-to-one sizing.

It is held under the HR menu and called Granville#6 - Please let me have your comments.

Cranial Trauma Dissertation - Change to information 24th November 2009

Ben Stillwell's dissertation An investigation into cranial trauma on skeletal remains at Sedgeford, Norfolk, UK - ref 51 on the SHARP list - is linked to a GeoCities page that no longer functions. This is because the whole Geocities area has been discontinued and the content removed. We have contacted Ben for a copy of his paper and there is a paper copy of Ben's dissertation in the OVH. I have loaded a flawed copy (retrieved from a web archive of the paper) but it is missing a number of the images. This is available via the Publications tab after logging in.

The new copy will be uploaded when we have Ben's agreement and a complete copy...

Fieldwalking - Added Mid-November 2009

I have added the spreadsheet data from 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 & 2004 to the PostEx website. I have also drawn in the Parish Boundary and various field boundaries to the fieldwalking data analysis. I have entered most of the data for 2005 into a spreadsheet but not recoded the relative fieldwalking squares (eg 'A2', 'C11') onto the OS map grid references.

The data for this year (2005) uses a different coding system for finds and general agreement is needed on the 'standard' for SHARP is required so that find data can be compared acrosss the parish. For these reasons the data for 2005 is not included in the database.

It might be worthwhile to separate the find type (eg Pottery - Small Jar) from the historic period (Saxon - Middle) perhaps which would allow, for example, all finds for a particular period to be viewed and clusters identified(?)

Unfortunately there are still some issues with the source data:
  - My Field boundaries don't match data - I need to recheck against maps
  - More map information (more reference points such as Field boundaries, roads and landmarks need adding)
  - Recent years 2007/08/09 not yet analysed(?))
  - 1996/97 - Data not in spreadsheet format. I think some analysis was done but possibily only on Pottery?
  - Finds from 1999 - 2004 not always consistent naming (ie doesn't allow find-patterns from previous years to be compared)
  - 2005 New classification methodology used

It is held under the Archive top-menu and called Fieldwalking Analysis - Please let me have your comments.

Meeting to be held in February to discuss the best way forward

Sedgeford Airfield Project - September 2009

The digital photographs taken as part of the 2009 Sedgeford Airfield Project are now on-line. The majority of these photos have been stored off this site in an alternative area as they are quite large (as the alternative area offers a large amount of space and is free!). You can find them by selecting Bulk Photo Archive from the PostEx in the top menu line.

I have also stored those for Building 1 on this site in the Postex tab (after logging in) and are in the Alternative Photo area under SAP SH09 Building 1, you should find 21 images of this building.

In addition stored here are some 'stock' photographs that were obtained from Hendon showing activity at the time the airfield was in use. These are in Sedgeford Airfield SH09 in the same gallery.

Cambridge Skeletal Images - Added 8th September 2009

These are a number of photographs from the Ducksworth collection and also datasheets etc. - I expect that they will be mainly of interest to the Human Remains team. These photographs are not held on the main PostEX site but, due to space limitations, can be obtained

Online Storage - Added 29th August 2009

Due to the high cost of on-line webspace I am experimenting with using a free file repository provided by Microsoft. I have put up a few files and these can be viewed by clicking on the link
